If you are running Windows 10 Home Edition, this trick will not work. This only works with Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise Editions. We will be using Group Policy Editor to disable Windows 10 updates. In the Run dialog type gpedit. Click on the Edit policy setting to open the Configure Automatic Updates dialog.

On the Configure Automatic Updates dialog, select Enabled in the left pane, in the Options section click on the Configure Automatic Updating Combo Box and in the dropdown list select Notify for download and notify for install. This policy specifies whether this computer will receive security updates and other important downloads through the Windows automatic updating service.

In my experience, by using the registry values implemented via GPO on older builds of Win10 Pro, this has prevented feature upgrades. I started digging to find the registry values that would control and prevent the upgrade. Seems to still work in our environment with older builds of Win10 Pro. Please let me know if it doesn’t work for you. Always great to see new how-tos for Windows 10 in the community. I spent a lot of time figuring stuff out at my last job, as we were early adopters!

Two months later Just patches and security updates. Another vote for mandatory version disclaimers. I’m rather sick of reading about things I would like to do only to find out that you can’t with Pro.

I loath the idea of having to move to Enterprise. Too bad Pro isn’t “Pro” anymore. When I created this how-to, I wasn’t aware the Win10 Pro didn’t honor the registry settings. I had read that it didn’t honor some GPO values. I went ahead and edited the title of this article to reflect that the registry changes will only be honored by Windows 10 v RTM. Since is out of support this doesn’t seem to be a viable option.

Is anyone using WSUS to block feature upgrades past ? Is that still working? Prevent Windows 10 automatic feature upgrades on v via Group Policy.
