The article for which Doug provided a link has sections that explains how to 1 troubleshoot COM and Startup add-ins, 2 rename the Normal template, and 3 delete Word’s registry entries.

Another thing that you could do is to repair Word in the Control Panel. Click on the Uninstall a Program and then one the Microsoft Office. If the application works fine in application safe mode, try disabling the add ins for the application and check the result. Click the File tab. Go to Options.
