On your mission you will progress from level to level shooting bad cowboys, jail-breakers, and bad Indians with your revolver; collecting bullets, dynamites, sheriff stars, and other useful items; running, jumping, ducking, and climbing.

On every level you have to complete different submissions to progress – either to free a Bank Director, or to collect Three Nuggets for Miner to obtain a Nitroglycerine, or to build a Totem for Apaches, etc. At the end of some levels you confront the big boss, it is often the one of Daltons.

Different arcade sequences between levels allow you to chase the Dalton brothers or train riding your faithful horse Jolly; to run away from Tornado; and to ride on the raft.

Bonus level arcade sequences represent your wrestling challenge with Jolly, bottles shooting, or revolver’s barrel roulette. Lucky Luke and Spirou are two relatively obscure 2D side-scrolling platformers designed by Infogrames based on popular Belgian comics. Lucky Luke is a Western cowboy, while Spirou is a bumbling bellboy who looks like he could be Tintin’s younger brother.

In Spirou, you task is to rescue the world-famous scientist Count Champaignac from the clutches of an evil organization intent on using his latest invention to take over the world, while in Lucky Luke your job as the good sheriff is to restore order to town. Both games sport colorful cartoony graphics, fluid animations, and funny antics that fans of both comics will recognize.

If you enjoy the likes of Pitfall, Jungle Book, or Infogrames’ other licensed cartoon platformers most notably the Tintin series , you will probably also like these two less known games.

They offer solid plots, crisp graphics and sound effects, as well as a challenging but fun gameplay. I prefer Spirou of the two: it has more “interactive” backgrounds, interesting levels, and more surprises than Lucky Luke. Too bad the variety of gameplay is not as good as Tintin games.

The story begins when the Daltons manage to escape from prison and Lucky Luke decides to hunt them down. The first mission is something of a tutorial really: walk around town, find a key, then come back and open the door to the jail to get some dynamite.

What sort of sheriff would store dynamite in a jail However, the level has some puzzle aspects as well. For example, there might be a bad guy shooting at you from a window to your left. But instead of turning around and shooting at him, you have to fire at the very handy anvil in front of you which the bullet bounces off and hits the bad guy.

It’s little things like that that make the game such an interesting little gem. You do have a number of different game types; for example, there is a level where you have to shoot as many bottles as possible without hitting the bartender for bonus points, and another one where you have to travel along the roof of a train to rescue some hostages.

Some of the levels are more puzzle than shooter. For instance, when you’re in the Indian level, you don’t even get to use weapons at all. The graphics are done in cartoon-style 3D and are quite well animated. For example, when you shoot a particular bad guy, he’ll jerk a bit then fall over like a felled tree. Lucky Luke is animated quite well himself, including unbelievable poses for firing his gun. As an example, if you are firing your gun in one direction then point in the opposite direction while still firing, he’ll bend completely over backwards and fire from that position.

While rather cool looking, his chiropractor must have a field day. When you lose a life, an animation of Lucky Luke doing something like tossing his gun in the air or straightening his clothes will appear.
