Your dealer obviously has an agenda–to make a profit from selling the node. In theory the Node ought to sound better than a PC, since it is optimized for music playback, and PCs are not, though a Program such as Audirvana Plus shuts down the other stuff on the PC and tries to optimize it for music playback. I understand why the Node should sound a tad better, but it simply did not in my experience. With the Node one doesn’t get dropouts as each new email arrives, and the BlueOS works pretty well to control things from a tablet, and there are other reasons to invest in it, not the least IMO that I don’t like having an actual computer in my Audio System.
If you spend much higher on a streamer, it will sound better than the PC. If you don’t hear a difference then keep using the pc. I would not expect the Node to be better but it could be compared to some computers. Then there are a few purpose-built computers that is said to sound really, really great. Here are some more tips about building a pc server yourself with some comments about parts that affect the audio quality. It might be unable to do other things after, if that is a concern.
I have also struggled with the same issues with my Audio mirror troubadour llse The Node is easier to use than PC, and most streamers give a more satisfactory experience than using just a PC. Many people feel this way, thus the market for streamers, otherwise everyone would be using a PC. I think that people have been confining themselves the thread to the question of the sonics of a PC vs Node.
In that respect I prefer the Node but it is easy to approach the same level with a PC and a software program that optimizes for playback. My Lyngdorf amp has built in streamer but does not handle Tidal or any streaming service with MQA quality. If so what are the advantages? I mainly listen to Tidal.
Can anyone explain how this works or provide any tips? I hope this question is not too elementary for this forum.
Lyngdorf is listed as a Roon partner. The streamer should be able to be a Roon core and bypass the PC. The Lyngdorf would be a Roon endpoint not the core. The core software has to run on a computer or ideally a dedicated computer like the Roon Nuclues or others that serve sole purpose of running the Roon software. Personally I think Roon is essential and I would skip on all other upgrades until getting setup and settled with Roon but that is a whole other discussion.
I have 2 node 2is and they work great and also serve the purpose of being a Roon endpoint in a couple systems where I don’t have a DAC that is a Roon endpoint. I also like that they have a volume control right on them so you can just walk up to it and raise or lower the volume as well as skip or rewind a track. With Roon and my Roon ready amp with built in Streamer and playing Tidal How do the audio files get to the amp.
The DAC is within the amp. The goal with considering Roon would be to stop passing the music files through the PC. The main draw with Roon is the awesome user interface as well as the sound quality is better than say iTunes. I hear it as far superior to airplay or spotify connect or Tidal even in my system.
Roon is a joy to use and explore your music far better than Tidal and it integrates Tidal so think of it as a way better Tidal user experience as well as better sound. You can use your phone as a remote control to run roon or an iPad or a desktop app as well. It’s a little confusing to make sense of how it works. I was terribly confused when I first looked into it but I can tell you it’s one thing I would never want to be without.
A roon lifetime membership is about the same price as a new node 2i. I assume you have the TDAI ? Its all setup to receive roon RAAT via wifi so basically you could run the roon software on your windows machine and then send the signal over your network. It plays bit-perfect if you do not use the resample options and use volume setting to max , but this do not have anything to do with the fact that Audirvana is a player instead of a dlna server It is not difficult to find information over the network about Audirvana, Google is your best friend for this.
I changed the Sonos Connect to get a better sound from a music streamer. In few words, I bought Audirvana as a replacement of the Sonos Interface, not really seeing thru the verbose and self-cheering documentation that it was doing more.
I still say that there is a design issue. FLAC files are bigger and bigger. Last sacd I ripped has one of its files MB big! Reading it means an up and a download on the network. I hope that other people reading this text understands this remark. The Audirvana remote could be used to manage this. The downside is that even if you’re heavily ensconced in Apple’s ecosystem, you’ll still need to invest in third-party products to enjoy lossless and hi-res at their fullest.

For classical and, from what I have read, for jazz Qobuz seems much better than any of the other options although, to be fair, I have not tried Apple Music for a long time due to the lack of any hi-res files, which I understand is shortly to change.

This is because these are the files used by the streaming service Tidal, which is easily among the most popular and wide-ranging high resolution streaming service — although it is being challenged by startups like Qobuz. This means they are both quick to stream, and suitably detailed. It uses some truly magical digital wizardry to deliver a very high quality file that is also slim enough to be streamed without interruption. If you have a music streamer, these are the two file types you’ll encounter the most — although you may wish to experiment with DSD, which is a whole different ball game.
Check out the explainer linked above for a full breakdown of that. When we talk about Google’s Chromecast and Apple’s AirPlay 2, we are referring to two different transmission protocols. They are simple and effective ways of sending audio from a mobile device to a music streamer — or a TV, wireless speaker, or video streaming stick. However, that’s not the case. Both AirPlay 2 and Chromecast are available on multiple different streamer models and brands, and using either of them is as easy as selecting your streamer as a source.
It must be said that, for most music streamers, you won’t encounter either of them unless you absolutely want to. This is because most streamers on our list have the ability to access services like Spotify and Tidal direct, without having to rely on an external mobile device to do the streaming for them.
As such, there’s no you need to use either transmission protocol. But they do certainly accommodate for them, if you want to experiment. Chromecast devices will be able to display, but that can be hit or miss.
We fully expect more devices to offer this as time goes on. We are the first to admit that many of the music streamers on our list are expensive. Unfortunately, that’s just the nature of this particular product category.
If you want this much technology in your life, you have to pay to play. And if you really demand perfection, then the basic interfaces of Spotify, Tidal, or Apple Music aren’t going to cut it. You need a dedicated music interface — something that can handle both your digital library, and that of a streaming service.
You need Roon, JRiver, or Audirvana. These dedicated software programs will not only let you extract the absolute most out of your audio, but will also give you a very pleasing interface to play around with. You’ll notice in our comparison table above that we have a specific column for whether a particular streamer is compatible with Roon.
There’s a very good reason for that. Roon is, by some margin, the most popular streaming interface on the market right now, with thousands of devoted users.
On the surface, what it does is simple. It takes files from a given source, such as a hard drive or a streaming service, and relays it to what is known as a Roon Core — a complicated term for a music streamer that happens to be compatible with Roon ‘Roon Ready’ to use the technical term. This means you don’t necessarily need to invest in an expensive music streamer to take advantage. If that was all it did, then we wouldn’t get nearly as excited about it as we do. Because what Roon does with its user interface is quite extraordinary.
Instead of just displaying track information, it turns what you’re listening to into a fun, well-designed digital magazine, with a wealth of information about the artist. Displayed on your phone, tablet, or PC, it’s an exceptional way to listen to music, and one that is highly rewarding. The downside? We’re not talking about iTunes here — this is not a free software program.
As such, it’s the kind of thing that only the most dedicated listener will want to go for. At the time of writing, there’s really no service on the market that can compete with the comprehensive nature of Roon, but there are options available — and many of them are significantly cheaper. Those looking for a Roon-like experience without the pricetag should consider something like Audirvana.
We may not be entirely sure how to correctly pronounce it, but it offers much the same experience that Roon does, albeit in a slightly clunky interface. The smart-asses among you are probably thinking that you don’t need a music streamer, because all you need to do is buy a wireless speaker or smart speaker to get the same effect. After all, if the definition of a music streamer is something that pulls audio from an external source, then surely wireless speakers count? It’s true: they do.
We didn’t say it was a perfect definition, but just because you can use a smart speaker as a music streamer doesn’t mean that you should. Here’s why. The music streamers on our list above aren’t concerned with actually playing audio. They are not built to produce music through a set of speaker drivers. They are concerned with receiving audio files, and transmitting them to a separate destination in the cleanest and most efficient way possible, while providing as much information as possible.
That means that all the research and development performed on them has gone into this one goal, rather than trying to act as a set of speakers as well. Does this mean that only music streamers will satisfy? Of course not. If you’re on a budget, or want to simplify your life, then by all means invest in a wireless speaker or smart speaker. They will do an excellent job. It’s chalk and cheese. And the point is this: music streamers are tools for those who demand the absolute best from their sound, and part of the way they achieve that is by focusing on a specific goal.
This doesn’t mean that you need to spend the earth — there are several affordable streamers on our list. But it does mean that, if you want to really boost your sound, you’ll need to invest in an additional set of speakers as well.

I am accessing the Vault files via my iMac and playing these back through headphones plugged into my iMac and using Audirvana software. I am amazed by the quality of the reproduction and wonder exactly what I am listening to and, especially in the case of MQA files, wondering how much unfolding is happening, and where. Can you help me understand what is happening in terms of DACs and why the quality is so good?
If you are accessing the files from your VAULT as any other NAS then we cannot answer that question as we are not doing any of the processing as that is being done all by your iMac and the Audirvana software. Thanks Tony. That’s what I expected was happening. But sometimes I am relegated to the room with the computer, hence iMac and Audirvana. I am toying with the idea of buying another Bluesound product for the “computer” room, especially as I have a few MQA files now.
