More impressive is an excellent background book full of snippets of information and some excellent line drawings – well worth a read. Hardware is a big headache these days. The game is supposed to run on a moderately fast with four megs, but eight megs is recommended and you’ll spend a lot of time waiting lor the battlefield to render when you scroll or switch magnification levels.
On a fast or a Pentium, though, it runs at a cracking pace. As I’m writing for an intellectual magazine there should be little need to explain what the American Civil War was. You can choose sides, naturally enough, and opt for one of the four ready-made battle scenarios that range from bloody affairs like Shiloh to unheard of skirmishes which are useful for getting started. The good news is that you can configure the game to your heart’s content.
There are nine factors that can be set to one of five levels: resources, supply, unit types, facilities, command and control, fatigue, terrain effects, morale and victory conditions. At the basic level your men respond instantly to orders and will do anything, no matter how suicidal. At the most complicated level, you’ve got time lag for orders, ammo supply problems, knackered troops and all kinds of problems that will leave you tearing your hair out.
Still, war is hell, as Sheridan said. At least I think he said it. You can also have all kinds of troop types from militia and sharpshooters to mounted infantry and rifled field guns, or simply choose infantry, cavalry and artillery, depending on your inclination. Orders are given by clicking on the unit flag and selecting an option from the icons on the right, which range from attack to advance – cautious or otherwise – defend, hold, withdraw and run away.
A good strategic option that last one. You can get a quick look at the unit’s make-up by clicking the right button too. Read our review of TOAW4 for an idea of how the game as whole plays. Developer: Campfire Games Available from: Steam. Read more: Ultimate General: American Revolution is a thing.
A chain-of-command system is currently under development, so far with higher ranking officers passing down orders to their subordinates, who can in turn order their men to follow their lead.
The game is primarily multiplayer, so the experience does depend on other players, but players do tend to actually work together. War of Rights has a development roadmap laid out, and it looks to have a promising future ahead.

Why Early Access? The Launch on Early Access will allow for a much greater audience to help us test the game and expand its features before the official release of the game. We are dedicated to bringing as many details and features into this game as possible as long as we have the support to do so.
There is no end goal for us and thus no set target for how long we plan for the game to be in Early Access. It is entirely possible that we someday realize our vision has been fulfilled and we therefore have a set release target – but until then we will keep on expanding the scope of the game and thus the time in Early Access. We hope you will be part of that journey with us.
It is very likely a rather big amount of new content will be created and added to the game different campaigns, units, army branches, etc. We look forward to having the Steam Early Access players bolster the ranks of our, already, excellent community. Add to Cart. Campfire Games is devoted to presenting the gruesome and glorious elements of the period, while maintaining the highest level of historical accuracy and realism as is possible with the wonders of CRYENGINE.
The project is entirely crowdfunded and has been developed on for the past 6 years. We consider it more of an ever evolving artistic piece rather than a final product with a targeted release deadline with set features.
